Are you tired of hitting paywalls while trying to access scholarly articles? Look no further than Unpaywall, a reliable Chrome extension that allows you to obtain full-text versions of research articles for free. With a total rating of 4.1 out of 5 based on user reviews, Unpaywall is a game-changer for those seeking legal and accessible PDFs of scholarly content.
Unpaywall works seamlessly in the background as you browse through research articles. When you come across an article, the extension automatically scans its index of 20 million free, legal full-text PDFs. If a copy is available, a green tab will appear, indicating that you can now read the article without any restrictions.
What sets Unpaywall apart is that it directs you to legal, author-posted manuscripts hosted on university and government web servers. These manuscripts have been uploaded with the explicit authorization of the publishers themselves, ensuring that you are accessing content legally. This type of manuscript, often referred to as "Green Open Access," is a well-established and legitimate part of the scholarly communications ecosystem.
Unpaywall exclusively focuses on papers that have been self-archived by authors on university and government web servers with the permission of publishers. By doing so, it adheres to the guidelines set by scholarly journals and ensures that only authorized versions are included in its index. It's worth noting that any papers posted outside of publisher permissions are not part of Unpaywall's database.
While Unpaywall has received positive feedback from users like David Linder, who found it to be effective and provided full articles without any payment, it's important to note that the extension may not work on all websites. Some users, such as Fabien cmoi and Lee B, reported issues with its functionality. Additionally, sites like the New York Times or Washington Post that utilize paywalls may not be compatible with Unpaywall.
Despite these limitations, Unpaywall remains a valuable tool for accessing scholarly articles. It not only saves you money but also provides access to a vast collection of legally available research articles. Give Unpaywall a try and enhance your research experience today!

Works awesomely
I love it. It can't always find free versions of research papers/journals, which is annoying, but most of the time for me it can. As much as I'd like to support the researchers and buy their research journals/papers, I cannot pay upwards of $40USD for a single article. I definitely suggest if you are a student who needs to use credible sources for research papers, I highly recommend this app. Like I said, it can't always find free versions, but it's worth a try :)
Works only on articles that are already free.
**Note its for scientific journals not mainsteam media like Wall Street Journal.** The extension name could perhaps be a little less generic. As for use in journals I typically access - this works, rarely. To concur with some of the feedback here - only occasionally does it procide access to a pdf, sometimes it fails when a pdf is available almost at the top of a google search, sometimes a bit more digging is required. Nice idea though.
Not working.
It's kind of useful, but sometimes it fails to detect the available full versions of articles. I mainly spend my time on Pubmed and sometimes there's a paper there with a clear link to the full free version of the article on Pubmed central, but Unpaywall still says that there is no free full version of this paper available. When the Unpaywall padlock icon is open and green - yes it is useful to be able to just click it and go directly to the free full version. But when the padlock is grey and locked, I still do my own search for a free version (often successfully), but I thought that this searching on my own was what this extension was supposed to save me time on.
Best
Doesn't work.
Only tried it on one article, worked first time, gave me the full article without paying. So super happy, thanks.
